Bread Upma Recipe

My father always says, we homo sapiens can do anything. Weird though, but the dish, for which I am sharing recipe in this post, kind of contradicts as well as testifies the statement at the same time. My observation is based on the fact, that whatever it may takes, we homo sapiens at some point cannot repeat the same bread and butter for the next breakfast. But, at the same time, this wonderful homo sapiens have ready and simple solution for this problem too😊. It is just that, turn your boring bread slices to interesting and ever creative ‘Bread Upma’😉

We all know that in today’s fast forward life, where literally the time to breathe properly is also considered a luxury, having elaborate and tasteful breakfast on a regular day is next to impossible. But since the God has created a system called human body, which cannot run without regular supply of food, we do not have any option, but to find solace in quick fixes. One such quick fix is bread, mainly consumed during breakfast, which is the first and the most crucial meal of the day.

Honestly, this humble bread is so humble, that it does not demand anything apart from 10 inch X 4 and ½ inch space, and can be taken as it is with a dollop of butter or jam and thus, takes care of the important part of the human existence and human worries. However, whatever be the solution, was this homo sapiens ever satisfied with anything? As the week progresses, so does the desperation to get rid of monotony. And we determined homo sapiens make it a mission to bring variation on everything, including the humble bread lying quietly in the refrigerator.

And thus, we have discovered various other ways to consume bread with the aid of different and easy bread recipes. Bread Upma is one such simple, easy and healthy bread recipe, providing the much needed variation and accommodating the spice loving Indians to customize the dish as per their preference. Recipe: Bread Upma Recipe

Preparation Time: 30 minutes Cooking Time: 40 minutes Equipment Used: A pan, a turner, knife, peeler, cutting board, vegetable chopper and a bowl Yield: Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup cashews cut into halves
  • 2 cups cabbage chopped
  • 2 medium sized carrots chopped
  • 1 cup chopped beans
  • 1 potato diced
  • 1 tomato sliced
  • 1 onion sliced
  • ¼ cup curry leaves
  • 8 tablespoons refined oil
  • ½ teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 and ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • ¾ teaspoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon dry coconut powder
  • 13 slices of brown bread
  • ¼ cup water
  • 0.5 inch X 0.8 inch or 1teaspoon crushed ginger
  • 1 – 2 chopped green chilli

Method:

  • Take the cashews and cut them into halves
  • Keep the vegetables ready as per the measurement provided in the ‘Ingredients’ section
  • Heat a pan
  • Add oil, once the pan is hot and heat the oil
  • Fry the cashews once the oil is hot and remove the cashews from the pan once they start turning brown
  • Now add mustard seeds into the same oil
  • Add onion when the mustard seeds start popping and fry them till they are translucent
  • Add the rest of the vegetables, followed by curry leaves
  • Add ½ teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon turmeric powder, ½ teaspoon sugar and coconut powder
  • Mix the ingredients properly with a turner
  • Cover the pan and let the vegetables cook on sim
  • In the meantime, crush the bread slices into small pieces
  • Check if the vegetables are tender as per your requirement
  • Add crushed bread slices into the pan, when the vegetable pieces are tender
  • Mix the vegetables and the bread properly with a turner and add ¼ cup water
  • Add the crushed ginger and chopped green chilli
  • Spread the ingredients and adjust salt and sugar
  • Spread the fried cashew pieces on the bread upma
Cashews

Cut the cashews into halves and keep the vegetables ready.

Heating a pan

Heat a pan.

Heating oil

Heat oil.

Frying cashews

Fry the cashews once the oil is hot.

Fried cashews

Remove the cashews from the pan once they start turning brown.

Mustard Seeds popping

Add mustard seeds into the same oil.

Frying onion

Fry onion.

Cooking vegetables

Add rest of the vegetables, followed by curry leaves.

Turmeric Powder

Add salt, turmeric powder, sugar and coconut powder.

Stirring vegetables

Cover the pan and let the vegetables cook on sim after mixing the ingredients properly.

Crushed bread slices

In the meantime, crush the bread slices into small pieces.

Crushed bread pieces with vegetables

Add crushed bread slices into the pan, when the vegetable pieces are tender.

Preparing bread upma

Add ¼ cup water.

Crushed ginger

Add the crushed ginger and chopped green chilli.

Adding salt to a dish

Adjust salt and sugar.

Cashew pieces on a dish

Spread the fried cashew pieces.

Tips:

  • As a precaution, rinse the cashews before using them
  • The ‘Preparation Time’ mentioned above is for chopping vegetables with a chopper
  • Keep the vegetables chopped and keep everything ready before switching the oven hob on
  • Not sure if it is owing to preference for Mom’s made Potato Sandwiches during childhood, but potatoes go well with bread
  • Initially, add little salt and sugar for easy tendering of vegetables. Later, adjust salt and sugar towards the end of cooking as per your taste
  • You can also use white bread or any kind of bread for this recipe. White breads are little sweeter than brown breads. Adjust salt and sugar accordingly
  • I have added ¼ cup water in this recipe. You may do away with the same. However, it is advisable to add little water if you generally get a choky feeling after having bread
  • The ‘Preparation Time’ does not include crushing bread slices, grating ginger and chopping green chillies, as they were done simultaneously when vegetables were getting cooked
